Episode 101
Cross Border, Cross Country: Meet the British Financial Planner Taking on America
What does America look like through the eyes of a British financial planner who has just moved across the Atlantic?
In this episode of Expat Wealth, Richard Taylor introduces Cross Border, Cross Country: a new recurring format following Plan First Wealth’s newest team member, James “JB” Beck, as he travels across the US while making the transition from experienced UK financial planner to US-UK cross-border specialist.
JB lands in America with a decade of financial planning experience behind him, including eight years working with business owners at UK firm Fiscal Engineers. He knows the British system inside and out. But moving to the US means learning an entirely different rulebook: US tax, UK pensions and US pensions sitting awkwardly side by side, the US-UK tax treaty, and the everyday financial quicks nobody warns you about. In other words, the same challenges faced by the British expats Plan First Wealth works with every day.
And JB isn’t experiencing America from one place. For the next 18 months, he and his wife are living on the road in a 43-foot RV pulled by a Ford F-350, using the journey to explore different states, communities and lifestyles while deciding where they might eventually put down roots.
Richard will be checking in with JB throughout the journey, following both sides of his experience: what he discovers about life across different parts of America and what surprises him as he develops from a UK financial planner into a cross-border US-UK adviser.
In this first instalment, JB explains why a Year 9 maths lesson ultimately pushed him towards financial planning, why joining Plan First Wealth felt like a natural fit, and how experiencing the same international move as the firm’s clients gives him a unique perspective on the financial realities of relocating to America.
They also discuss the first culture shocks JB has already encountered — from visiting a bank manager and getting a chequebook to discovering how the US financial system works very differently from the UK — before looking ahead to an 18-month route that will take him from New Hampshire through the Carolinas, the South, Texas and across much more of the country.
Whether you’re moving to America, already deep in the British expat experience, or just want honest expat tax advice and cross-border financial planning from someone living it, this is where the journey starts.

And I’m really looking forward to following you around America as you go on this, this journey I’ve been already I’ve seen, you know, just in my first few weeks.
JB
Some of the differences over here are way better than what we’ve got in the UK. So yeah, I’ll fill you in with all my observations and, uh, thoughts along the way. We’ll be learning. How long is it going to take? Because, uh, obviously America is an absolutely massive country. You know, it’s 50 different countries inside one country in a way, isn’t it?
JB
I mean, driving it on, on the roads was absolutely fine. It is the parking, which is, uh. Yeah. Gonna test our marriage, I think.

Over the same period, JB will be morphing from a UK financial planner into a cross-border US UK advisor.

Um, and I want to get straight into it. I’m delighted to introduce, uh, James Beck, uh, who has joined planned for his wealth as a very an associate planner.
But you soon to be a lead planner. You’ve come from a very distinguished lead planner background. Uh, so I’m delighted to to introduce James Beck as the newest plan first wealth member. Hi, James. Hi, Richard.
00:02:54.270 — 00:02:57.390 · JB
Thanks very much for having me. I’m excited to be here and to get going.
00:02:57.630 — 00:03:27.550 · Richard Taylor
Yeah, we’re very excited to have you. Uh, and we’re also very excited to introduce this new show, which is, uh, a temporary show as we follow James around America in an RV. But we’ll get to all that. I just wanted to. I just wanted to put that out there. Uh, we’ll get to all that. But first of all, James, will you, uh, introduce yourself to people?
Tell tell people where you’ve come from, what you’ve been doing, how you’ve ended up in America. Um, yeah. Let’s go from there.
00:03:27.630 — 00:03:51.630 · JB
Yeah, absolutely. So a bit of a bit of a life story. So, uh, I’ll try and keep it as brief as I can, but I’m, um, been in the financial planning world for ten years. Lived in the UK my whole life. But my wife is a dual citizen with the US. So her mum moved over to the UK to be with her dad. So she has both passports. She
00:03:52.750 — 00:04:33.470 · JB
has always wanted to go over to the States. She did a year at university at the University of Texas in Austin. I went and spent some time with her. Absolutely loved it. Um, so we always knew in the back of our minds if I could pluck up the question to ask her to marry me, that, uh, that would be something that would be on the cards for us.
Professional background. Um, so I’ve been in the financial planning space for ten years. Um, I started off very briefly as a maths teacher. Actually, I lasted the grand total of. Yeah, of of three, three months. So, uh, if you remember, there was a school. School teach first schools, direct salaried program in the UK had.
Yeah.
00:04:33.510 — 00:04:35.470 · Richard Taylor
So you went to teach for America here?
00:04:35.630 — 00:05:25.230 · JB
Okay, so because I was a maths teacher, like my background’s maths, I studied at a university. Always loved numbers, I thought I want to teach maths. Went straight in, um, teaching a class, no teaching experience. Absolutely loved the teaching, but I was very frustrated about the curriculum and what I had to teach.
There was a distinctive moment. Year nine class. Someone said, sir, when am I ever going to use trigonometry? And I think we can all have that moment in our mind when we sat in the class and go, you know, do I really need to learn this? And, uh, yeah, that that resonated with me because I was like, you need to know what a bank account is, what credit cards are.
And that’s kind of how my finance journey began, really, because I was very passionate about what should we teach children? Because I think it’s such a gap in in our education system.
00:05:25.270 — 00:05:27.070 · Richard Taylor
So that’s where we come in a financial advisor.
00:05:27.150 — 00:05:36.670 · JB
Yeah. Yeah, yeah. So I very quickly yeah I did because I love I love numbers and I love people. Um, and that is kind of I think our job in a nutshell is.
00:05:36.710 — 00:05:36.990 · Richard Taylor
Yeah.
00:05:37.030 — 00:06:48.900 · JB
You know, connecting connecting those two things. So I did a little bit of work experience with a friend’s dad who was a one man solo band practice. Um, and I knew that’s why I wanted to go into. So I got my qualifications after a year, went straight out into advising. I absolutely loved it. But there was so much to learn.
Um. And I found myself, um, after two years in the industry, looking for a really good firm. And that’s when I joined a firm called Fiscal Engineers, which is where I spent eight years, and I learn everything and under the Sun about financial planning, we worked very specifically with business owners who sold their business and everything around that.
Um, and for me, that was a great place to learn. But I always had this inkling in the back of my mind that we wanted to go over to the States. So, uh, that was something that me and my wife decided to do after we got married, which was in October 2021. And it probably took me two and a half years from first submission to get my green card to go through the whole process.
So it was a really long, um, process to go through that. Um, but we’re really glad that we did it. Um, and that’s obviously what’s brought me to to plan first wealth.
00:06:48.900 — 00:07:00.300 · Richard Taylor
So you were so you were Nottingham, right? So eight years with fiscal engineers, top firm in the UK. You did everything there. Rose. Rose to the top. You are CFP, right? Yep. So certified financial planner.
00:07:00.300 — 00:07:12.380 · JB
Certified financial planner in the UK, which is the highest level of qualification that you can get. Um, and did all the all all my all any UK exams under the sun. I’ve ticked them all off.
00:07:12.420 — 00:07:32.340 · Richard Taylor
Good. And now you’ve moved to America with your, uh, with your American dual citizen wife? Yeah. And we’re going to talk about what you’re going to be doing in a second. But you’ve obviously joined Pan First Wealth, which we are delighted about. But why why have you. You know, you must have had other options.
Why have you. Why have you joined as well?
00:07:32.380 — 00:07:58.620 · JB
Uh, really, for me, it was especially in our world, I didn’t want to take all the knowledge that I’d built up and learn, um, and not use it. So obviously in the US, it’s a whole different system. A lot of the fundamentals are the same. But, you know, UK expats living in the United States was a perfect fit for me personally because a I’m making that journey at the moment.
I’m going to be going through a lot of the things that you know, your clients have or will go through.
00:07:58.660 — 00:08:01.580 · Richard Taylor
You’ll be making some of the same mistakes. Will. Yeah, I’m sure.
00:08:01.620 — 00:08:28.060 · JB
I’m sure I’m I’m absolutely, absolutely. But, um, but while I, you know, my UK knowledge is really good and I can use that while I’m learning the US, um, side of things. Um, I think it will really help me also understand the clients that you work with, because I’ve done the same journey as them. So it was a natural fit for me.
And obviously I’ve had lots of conversations with with yourself and the rest of the team and, uh, it felt like the right home for me.
00:08:28.100 — 00:09:32.660 · Richard Taylor
Yeah. Uh, I, I can say with absolute certainty we feel the same way. Um, we’re really, really glad you joined. We think you’re one of us. Um. And we’re we’re very excited for you to, uh, to become a lead partner as soon as possible here. So right now, James is working under me with my clients. And as we take on new clients, just to get him from being a pure British financial advisor, financial planner to a cross-border US, UK cross-border financial planner.
Um, to make sure he has the the you know, the knowledge and the experience on top of this personal experience, which is going to be learning right now to to do this properly. So yeah, we’re we’re we’re really excited. So and you have got a bit of a journey there James a bit. I know you listen to these podcasts.
So you’ve got some sort of idea and I know you’ve been through it with your wife and yourself. There is uh, the US does make things uniquely complex. It’s a tremendous opportunity being here. But they do make things uniquely challenging, uh, and sometimes a little bit scary. So we’ll help you navigate that aspect of it and then unleash you on the world.
00:09:32.700 — 00:09:46.700 · JB
Yeah, absolutely. And I mean, we’ve already come across some of those at the moment. I mean, I think I spoke to my first bank manager in, well, since I’ve been alive, really here because we we had to go in to see the bank managers to open our accounts and everything. So, uh, yeah, that was an experience.
00:09:47.330 — 00:10:28.289 · Richard Taylor
You need to get a secure credit card, mate. Um, right. Let’s talk about what you’re doing. So you have joined us, and we’re a remote firm. We work with all our clients. Remote? I have clients who live in the same town as me, and we still meet them for an annual for our for our regular meetings. Remotely. Because we’re we’re remote.
We do everything online. Um, and, and our staff are also all remote. But you’re you’re taking this to a whole other level. Yeah. Let’s tell people. I mean, I know I’ll tell them as we have this conversation right now and for this conversation and future conversations, James is oh, James is in a I, JB is sat in a, uh, a massive RV
00:10:29.490 — 00:11:00.010 · Richard Taylor
because for the first 18 or for the next 18 months, JB will be travelling around America in his massive RV driving a Ford F-350. I mean, he’s really gone all in on America here, folks. Driving an f a Ford F-350 dragging along a massive RV and you are going to be covering. I mean, the whole of America, we’re talking all 50 states.
Not. Probably not. Yeah, 4948 states. If we if we just glued, uh, Alaska in Hawaii.
00:11:00.130 — 00:11:22.730 · JB
As much as we can, I think that will be part of the journey along the way. We’ll be learning. How long is it going to take? Because obviously America’s a absolutely massive country. Um, but yeah, that’s the plan is to find where do we want to lay down roots, where do we want to be and explore the country and have exposure?
Because it is, you know, it’s 50 different countries inside one country in a way, isn’t it?
00:11:22.890 — 00:11:28.010 · Richard Taylor
Very much so. So tell folks, what’s the what have you got the whole 18 months mapped out.
00:11:28.010 — 00:11:36.330 · JB
So now at the moment we’ve mapped out till, till Christmas, um, and then we’ve planned, kind of planned the campgrounds exactly where we’re going to be.
00:11:36.370 — 00:11:38.010 · Richard Taylor
So wait, where are you right now?
00:11:38.170 — 00:12:19.570 · JB
So right now I’m in New Hampshire, so my wife’s whole her American side of the family, um, are up here. We spent the summer here just getting settled in, and we moved into the RV about two and a half weeks ago. So we’re just getting everything settled and we hit the road this Friday. So our first, um, our first leg in a way, is, uh, is our fifth wedding anniversary.
Um. Oh, nice. In October. And we’re going to be at the Austin Grand Prix in October for that. So it’s going from New Hampshire down to see some friends in South Carolina. Um, and then we’re going across Alabama, Mississippi to Texas. That’s our first leg you’re doing.
00:12:19.570 — 00:12:29.890 · Richard Taylor
So we’re we’re talking now on the second of, uh, September. You’re leaving on Friday for the first leg of your trip, and by mid-October you’re going to be in Austin.
00:12:29.890 — 00:12:31.250 · JB
End of October. Yeah.
00:12:31.290 — 00:12:33.090 · Richard Taylor
Oh, you really are covering some ground, aren’t you?
00:12:33.130 — 00:12:34.530 · JB
Yeah, yeah, yeah, we will be.
00:12:34.570 — 00:12:50.930 · Richard Taylor
And. And what are you. What’s the idea here? Are you gonna just remind me I actually I legitimate I’m not doing this for the podcast. I’ve legitimately forgotten is the idea you travel Friday to Sunday and then you bed up somewhere for a week or two weeks. Are you going to stay in place at a time?
00:12:50.930 — 00:13:33.050 · JB
So it’s usually going to be about two weeks that we’re going to be somewhere. This first leg is going to be a little bit sort of quicker, because we’ve got an end destination at a time that we have to be there. Um, but we will. There’s this thing called harvest House where you can go and stay overnight. And there might be, for example, we’re staying at a vineyard that you can camp there providing you go and drink some of their wine.
So we do a short stay at a couple of places, and then we’ll park up somewhere on the Saturday or the Sunday for a few weeks at a time. Um, so that’s been great. So, uh, yeah. So we’re doing Friday. We’re going to be doing about 200 miles. Saturday we’ll do 300, and then we’re staying just outside Washington, D.C. for two weeks.
00:13:33.130 — 00:13:33.690 · Richard Taylor
Wow.
00:13:34.930 — 00:13:48.000 · Richard Taylor
And she’d also tell folks, uh, JP wasn’t working yesterday because you were learning to toe. So you had someone come and teach you to toe this RV, right? When you’re in your monster truck. How did that go?
00:13:48.040 — 00:14:11.040 · JB
Yeah, we had a lady called Penny from Kentucky. So she travelled all the way from Kentucky. Um, to come and teach us. And. Yeah, it was fun. It was great. The the park we were in were really nice. They. So it was kind of like going back to doing your driving test. We were doing kind of reversing it in. We were doing different manoeuvres and then we went out onto the highway.
So we were probably out for about 8 or 9 hours actually driving yesterday.
00:14:11.160 — 00:14:11.600 · Richard Taylor
How’d you get.
00:14:11.600 — 00:14:22.560 · JB
On? Yeah, it was really good. Don’t get me wrong. It’s, you know, reversing that thing is tricky because you turn left to go right and vice versa. So, you know, um, but I think.
00:14:23.120 — 00:14:25.320 · Richard Taylor
It’s big, folks. What is it, 64 foot.
00:14:25.360 — 00:14:30.120 · JB
Uh, it’s 43ft, but with the truck, it’s about. With the truck, it will be 60ft total.
00:14:30.160 — 00:14:50.160 · Richard Taylor
Okay, so it’s a for you. It’s a it’s a Ford F-350. Tug it, uh, tugging a, uh, 43 foot. And it is big, guys. It is really big. um. It’s pretty cool, actually. Uh, yeah, that is a that’s something to be, uh. I can’t really imagine what it’s like, um, hauling that around.
00:14:50.320 — 00:14:57.920 · JB
Yeah. I mean, driving it on the on the roads was absolutely fine. It is the parking which is, uh, going to test our marriage, I think, in a way. Yeah.
00:14:57.960 — 00:15:00.560 · Richard Taylor
How did he. How did you get it to where it is now?
00:15:00.840 — 00:15:21.920 · JB
Uh, so we got it delivered. So, uh. Okay. Being financially savvy. We did a lot of, uh, research and due diligence on the type of model that we wanted. Um, and it was from an Ohio. So they drove it all the way from Ohio to drop it off. But that was the for the one we wanted. That was the best place to buy it from.
00:15:21.960 — 00:16:16.080 · Richard Taylor
I’m excited to announce that Expat Wealth has its first sponsor. The Global Financial Planning Institute. The CFP exists to provide education, community tools, resources and ongoing research for financial planners and other advanced financial professionals working with international and cross-border clients in the US and Americans abroad.
I’m a GFP Institute fellow, and I’ve put all our employees through their GFP programs when they join us. I’ve met some great people. I’ve learned a ton. It’s a genuine community of internationally minded folk doing their best to serve their clients properly and critically, sharing what they know in the oftentimes challenging and ambiguous US cross-border environment.
And as anyone in this sector will tell you, you’re always learning. So if you work with international clients and or Americans abroad, or if this is an area you’re looking to get into. Check out the GFP at.
00:16:19.480 — 00:17:31.640 · Richard Taylor
Institute. You will be glad you did and I hope to see you there soon. But but I mean to get into because you’re in a campground right now. But someone put it there for you. So you delivered your first time walking it up and driving it around. Well. Well done. Good for you. Yeah. So we are going to this this this show.
What did I call it? Cross border, cross country, which? Which points to the fact that JRB is becoming a cross-border financial planner. At the same time, he is crossing the country in his in his RV, discovering America, going to places parts of America that I’ve never been to. And James Boyle, my my colleague who is very American, he’s also never been to.
And we’re going to basically follow you on your journey and check in with you and get your observations, your thoughts as you, as you, as you see, you know, there’s no such thing as seeing all of America. But you see, you’re going to see a lot more of America in 18 months than even I’ve seen in nearly 11 years here.
And I am fascinated to to get your perspectives as you meet Americans, all sorts of different Americans in different parts of the country, and you see different parts of the country. Um, and I’m really, really intrigued and, and I’m frankly excited to, to to just see what you make of it all.
00:17:31.720 — 00:17:41.830 · JB
Yeah. No, as a, as a way, like, we can’t wait to hit the road and explore all the different, the differences, even between the North and the South. Um. Yeah, absolutely.
00:17:41.910 — 00:18:02.950 · Richard Taylor
And the Midwest, the North South and the Midwest and the West. Yeah. Very different. And it is this really kind of a jerk. Is this a journey to to to just experience America, or is this really a case of like, no, we’re we’re on a recce here. Do we want to live in the northeast? We want to live in, uh, Austin. Do we want to live on the West Coast?
Is it really everywhere you go? Are you going to be evaluating it for a. Could this be where we want to settle?
00:18:02.990 — 00:18:40.470 · JB
Yeah, absolutely. And there’s there’s places that we’ve kind of already got on our list that we are we will spend more time in. So Austin is one because my wife’s been there. We know it well. We enjoy it as a city and the lifestyle we’re going to be spending probably about 4 or 5 weeks there. Charleston, South Carolina’s high on our list.
Um, so anywhere we think we may want to potentially lay down roots, we’re going to spend a little bit longer there. But I’m sure there will be some places we see on the road that will surprise us and think, actually, we might want to spend more time here. So the nice thing about it is we’ve got the flexibility To change on the fly.
I suppose in a way, if we do fall in love with a particular place.
00:18:40.510 — 00:18:52.470 · Richard Taylor
Hmm. Okay, so I’m going to check in with you in a month’s time. Well, obviously I’m going to see a lot more of you, but for the for this podcast, I’m going to check in with you in a month’s time. Where will you have been then? You’ll have been to Washington.
00:18:52.710 — 00:19:11.830 · JB
Yep. And I think in about a month’s time, start of October, we’ll probably be in South Carolina. So we’ve got some friends in Simpsonville. Um, uh, sorry. Greenville. So we’re going to be spending some time there. So we go through Charlotte to there. So I think that’s where we’ll probably be around then.
00:19:11.990 — 00:20:06.430 · Richard Taylor
Hey, you got more friends in America than I have. Uh, I’ve been here plenty, a lot longer. Uh, cool. Right. So I’ll speak to you in a month and we’ll find out what you’ve been up to. We’ll find out what you’ve seen. Uh, we’ll find out what you make of it all. Uh, we’ll also find out I’m interested as you, as you, as you have experience in a high level financial planner in the UK dealing with some pretty serious people.
Um, and, um, I’m really intrigued to, uh, as you learn this, this cross-border US, UK aspect of it or what you make of it all. Some stuff’s going to really shock you and surprise you. Um, some of the stuff you’re going to think is a lot better as well, frankly. Uh, and I’ll be interested to know your observations as you start working with our clients and start working with me.
What you make of it, or what you think is good, what you think’s bad, what you think is completely stupid. Um. And just get your in. Get your, uh, get your perspectives on that as well.
00:20:06.470 — 00:20:22.750 · JB
Yeah, absolutely. I mean, I’ve only been under, you know, UK regulated advice. So even already I’ve seen, you know, just in my first few weeks, some of the differences over here are way better than what we’ve got in the UK.
